Beekeeping transhumance

Abstract

Within what is now known as “modern beekeeping,” “bee transhumance” is a practice that involves moving or transporting bee hives from one place to another. Although bee transhumance is a productive strategy, it contributes to ensuring the pollination of the species that depend on this process. At the same time, it allows us to appreciate the botanical richness of our country through the distinctive color, flavor, and aroma of the honey harvested. It also helps to foster a broader appreciation of the importance of bees and our country’s biodiversity. Thus, the objective of this article is to present the benefits this activity provides, from an ecological and economic perspective, the challenges that transhumance represents for beekeepers; the states where this activity is practiced and the blooms that represent them from a beekeeping perspective; as well as the positive ecological and social impacts that can be achieved by carrying out this activity in Mexico.
