Extrapulmonary complications associated with electronic cigarette consumption
Keywords:
electronic cigarettes, microvasculature, osteoblastsAbstract
The use of electronic cigarettes has had significant growth in the last decade, being promoted as a safer alternative to tobacco. However, recent research has demonstrated the damage they can cause, both in the respiratory system, as well as in the vascular and bone systems. Among these effects, greater dilation of the blood vessels of consumers was found, with less recovery of blood flow and a greater risk of hypertension and other blood conditions, which translates into greater cardiovascular risk. Regarding the bone system, delays have been found in the closure of fractures in pediatric patients, in addition to having found that both nicotine and the components in the liquid of electronic cigarettes, decrease the number of healthy bone cells and contribute to bone demineralization. Many harmful effects produced by this type of products have been found, which will have to be investigated in depth to determine the extent of the damage.
