Abstract

In 2025, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) launched a specialized group to study type 5 diabetes, a chronic disease caused by severe malnutrition during the early stages of human development. This condition affects the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing the hormone insulin, and consequently leads to high blood glucose levels. This recognition is based on an international consensus published in The Lancet Global Health (2025), where the diagnostic and pathophysiological criteria of this entity were established, characterized by deficient insulin secretion and preserved peripheral sensitivity.
