Abstract

This study addresses the impact of high-impact tourism on the Corpus Christi festival in Matão, São Paulo, Brazil, analyzing its contribution to the promotion of local culture and sustainable development. The festivity, of a religious nature, stands out for the creation of handmade carpets and religious processions, attracting an increasing number of national and international tourists. Although tourism has generated a significant increase in demand for tourism services and increased visibility nationally and internationally, it has also posed challenges such as over-commercialization and pressure on the authenticity of traditions. In terms of benefits, tourism has boosted the local economy, also contributing to the promotion of local culture and identity. However, challenges are identified in relation to the balance between tourism and local participation, as well as the preservation of traditions versus the loss of cultural authenticity. The methodology of the study uses a mixed approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. It is hoped that this research will expand knowledge on the impact of high-impact tourism on traditional festivities, providing recommendations for tourism management and cultural preservation in similar situations. In conclusion, the study highlights the need for balanced strategies that involve the local community, foster awareness among tourists, and establish regulatory measures to preserve cultural authenticity in the Corpus Christi festivity in Matão and similar events.
