Abstract

The former Lake Texcoco (northeast of the valley of Mexico) served as a source of food and transportation for the empire of Tenochtitlan from 1325 to 1521. After the conquest, the Spaniards began to divert the course of the lake due to the flooding problems that occurred in the capital city.  The drainage process continued until the 1970s, the year in which the "Texcoco Plan" began to rescue the lake areas. Some areas suffered negative changes in soil structure due to drainage processes; salinization became a major problem. Salinization limits and shape the flora and fauna development in the area, as well as the soil microbiome. Several salt tolerance plant species were introduced to restore soil salinization, for example, Distichlis spicata, Tamarix spp. and Suaeda nigra, among others. Despite the extreme salinity conditions, microorganisms inhabit this zone and carry out important biogeochemical functions for the global environment and have biotechnological potential for use in soil remediation and plant growth promotion.
