The berries are a diverse group that includes a variety of fruits with different colors, shapes, and sizes. The group comprises simple (e.g., blueberries) and composite (e.g., blackberries) fruits. The strawberry, blackberry, cranberry, and blueberry are the most commonly consumed berries in Mexico. The blackberry and other berries are rich in bioactive compounds with mainly antioxidant activity. Several epidemiological studies highlight the beneficial consumption of berries in general, and blackberries in particular, due to their nutritional content, fiber, and polyphenol antioxidants.
